If you live in Florence County and are in need of emergency food assistance, please stop by the St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry, located at 104 S. Kemp St., in Florence, SC from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Tuesdays & Wednesdays so we can provide you with help.

New registrations for our client families began in February 2026.

St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry is one of the many out reach programs supported by the families of St. Ann Parish in Florence, SC.

We need volunteers every week at the St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry:

Do you have two hours any day Monday through Wednesday you are available to help us from about 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM any day?

We Need Your Help Mondays through Wednesdays Each Week

On Mondays (generally), we need your help to pick up food from the Harvest Hope loading docks, in Florence, SC and deliver & unload the food at the St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry. Meet us there about 8:30-8:45 AM.

We stock shelves on Mondays and set up tables for distribution.

Volunteers begin about 8:30 AM and we are finished about 11:30 AM.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week, volunteers are needed to pack grocery bags for our clients & assist with carrying groceries to their cars.

Open to all women of the parish and your guests--invite some friends to join us!.

With the ' Luck of the Irish' you just may go home with a selection of books you've never read! Plan to bring 2-3 previously read but in good condition books of your theme & genre, wrapped and marked with a teaser on the label indicating what the theme might be--but don't give away the titles--it's a surprise!

Then, the swapping begins--what books will you be lucky to snag? Serving refreshments, all with a nod to Saint Patrick Day--ladies get your best green on--wear something green!

St. Martin dePorres, an outreach program supported by Saint Ann Catholic Church, is open to families living in Florence County on Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

We serve about 150 client families on average per week.

We are an affiliated partner agency of the regional Harvest Hope Food Program in Florence County.

We Need Your Help! Help Us Feed the Need!

Donations of non-perishable foods items to the church may be dropped off to the St. Ann Parish Office during business hours, Mon-Fri. 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM or to the parish office before any scheduled daily or weekend Mass.

Saint Martin dePorres, one of the many Outreach Programs supported by St. Ann Catholic Church for families living in Florence County, needs volunteers on Monday mornings, for about 3 hours, from 8:30 AM usually until 11:15 AM.

St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry will be open this week, Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Volunteers are needed for about 3 hours Monday-Wednesday, 8:15 AM – 11:15 AM. Remember, Hunger Knows No Season!

Registration begins for all clients will begin early February 2026.

On Mondays, generally, we pick up food from the Harvest Hope Regional Food Bank, located in Florence, SC, and deliver it to St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry, unload the trucks, stock shelves and set up for distribution for the week.

We need help to load, pick-up, deliver, unload the trucks, stock shelves and prepare for distribution on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings while we are open between 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Can you help us?

What is Lent?

"Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms ; and we practice self-control through fasting . We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection . In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults , a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.

Prayer

"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." -St. Therese of Lisieux (CCC 2558)

During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to practice self-control through fasting. Dive into God's word in Scripture this Lent or pray the rosary with your family.

Prayers and Devotions

Fasting

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to observe the particular law of their own sui iuris Church.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

CRS Rice Bowl is also one way Catholics can enhance their Lenten fasting practice by giving up meals and donating the cost of those meals to Catholic Relief Services in order to help those who do not have enough to eat.

Almsgiving

The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).

Many dioceses hold special appeals for local needs during Lent and there are countless other ways to offer your time, talent and treasure to needy individuals and organizations during Lent and throughout the year. What is an Advent Penance Service?

"An Advent Penance Service is a communal Catholic liturgy during the Advent season, focusing on preparation for Christmas by hearing Scripture, reflecting with an examination of conscience, praying together (including the Act of Contrition), and then offering individual confession and absolution with a priest, helping the faithful reconcile with God and the Church before the Nativity. It emphasizes communal sinfulness and healing, preparing hearts for Christ's coming. "

On Monday, December 22nd, at 5:00 PM several priests will be available for confessions at St. Ann Catholic Church in preparation for the celebration of the BIrth of Our LORD, Jesus Christ.

What is OCIA?

Formerly known as RCIA, OCIA is for those who are 18 and older who want to become a member of the Catholic Church and for Catholics interested in learning more about their faith.

""RCIA" or "OCIA"? RCIA is now called OCIA. During their November '21 U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops meetings, the U.S. Bishops changed the name of the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) to Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA)."

OCIA is a series of rites that are conducted in the context of learning about the Catholic faith. This education and spiritual formation leads a person to become fully incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Catholic Church.

OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process by which adults, unbaptized and baptized, can enter the Catholic Church through the reception of all three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. OCIA can also be a method for Catholics to complete their reception of the initiation sacraments.

Deacon Robert 'Bob' Cox and Mrs. Mary Barcomb lead our OCIA Classes at St. Ann Parish on Thursday evenings, at 6:00 PM, in the St. Ann Memorial Library on the campus of St. Ann Church, 113 South Kemp Street, in Florence, SC.

Open Registration After All Weekend Masses

Begins Saturday, August 16th - Sunday August 31st, 2025

Classes Begin Sunday, September 7th, 9:15-11:15 AM, Fr. Foley Hall

Why enroll your child in CCD/Faith Formation?

Foundation in Faith:

Help your child develop a strong understanding of Catholic teachings and traditions.

Preparation for Sacraments:

CCD classes help prepare children for receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Holy Communion, usually in second grade or above, and Confirmation in 8th grade or above.

Moral and Ethical Development:

Learn about God’s word and its application to everyday life, fostering a strong moral compass.

Fostering a Relationship with Jesus:

Through stories, lessons, and activities, children are guided towards a deeper, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Community and Social Support:

Participate in a supportive faith community with their peers and catechists.

Holistic Development:

Nurturing the spiritual aspect of your child, alongside their academic and social development, contributes to a balanced life.

Here at St. Ann Parish, we encourage ongoing faith formation beyond sacramental years, as there is always more richness of the Catholic faith to learn and experience.

Download the registration form from our St. Ann Parish Facebook Page, or the St. Ann Parish Website; fill in and drop off to the St. Ann Parish Office before or after any scheduled Mass Saturday, August 16-August 31, together with your fees.

In-Person:

Pick up a registration form from the church vestibule or parish office during business hours or after any scheduled Mass.

Required Documentation: Baptismal Certificates (especially for new students).

Registration Fees : 1 student $45.00; 2 Students $85.00; 3-4 Students - $95.00 and 5 or more students-$110.00 during OPEN Registration Saturday, August 16-Sunday, August 31st. Late fees begin Sunday, September 7th.

Members of St. Ann's Legion of Mary will meet on Tuesdays following the daily 12:00 PM Holy Mass (we'll meet about 12:30 PM), in the St. Ann Memorial Library in the St. Ann Parish Life Center, 113 South Kemp Street, Florence, SC. We invite you to learn more about the Legion of Mary--join us!

The essential aim of the Legion of Mary is the sanctification of its members.

The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work.

The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion.

Persons who wish to join the Legion must apply for membership in a Praesidium.

The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each individual.

The members participate in the life of the parish through visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospitals and through collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish.

If you live in Florence County and are in need of emergency food assistance, please stop by the St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry any day we are open, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Tuesdays & Wednesday so we can provide you with help.

New registrations for our client families began in January 2025.

We will be closed the first week of August 2025, on Tuesday, August 5th and Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, and will reopen on Tuesday, Auust 12th, and Wednesday, August 13th, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry is one of the many outreach programs supported by the families of St. Ann Parish in Florence, SC.

We Need Volunteers Every Week at the St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry:

Do you have two to three hours any day Monday through Wednesday you are available to help us from about 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM any day?

It's Time to Apply-Deadline Soon!

2025 Constance Cooper & Janet Springs Scholarship Program

It is time to apply for the 2025 Constance Cooper and Janet Spring Education Scholarships sponsored by the St. Ann Ladies Guild. The scholarships are now open to all high school graduates who will be attending a South Carolina college from freshman to senior- male or female- in the four parishes of St. Ann, St. Anthony, Infant Jesus and St. Louis as well as members of the Catholic campus ministry at Francis Marion University. Should you have any questions, email Mary Barcomb at the address below. Applications can be found at all the parish offices or on our St. Ann Parish website.

The Constance Cooper and Janet Spring Education Scholarships now consists of three (3) $1,000 scholarships awarded to Catholic high school graduates who will be attending a technical school or college/university in South Carolina in the upcoming school year.

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded based on Merit (3.0 GPA or higher), one $1,000 scholarship will be awarded based on Merit (3.0 GPA or higher) to a St Ann parishioner student, and the other $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded based on financial need.

No recipient can be awarded more than one scholarship.

All scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. The application must be mailed to St. Ann Catholic Church, 113 South Kemp St., Florence, SC 29506 Attn: Scholarship and must be postmarked by the deadline date of 7/15/2025 or the scanned application with accompanying documents-if any- is emailed to Mary Barcomb, marybee663@gmail.com by the deadline date. An email receipt will be sent by return email to the applicant.

What is a Prayer Group?

Our St. Ann Prayer Group is a gathering of Catholic and Christian individuals who come together to pray and worship to God together; coming to God through Jesus Christ and being guided and led by the Holy Spirit is always the aim, bringing all things back to Him and through Him.

We pray for the intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis; for our Clergy; for our Seminarians and for our Religious. We pray for vocations.

We pray for the intentions of those who are sick and infirm, who may be homebound or in nursing homes. We pray for our spouses, sons and daughters serving in the military stationed around the world. We pray for an end to this Coronavirus. We pray for peace in areas affected by war, famine, political unrest, and we pray for peace among all people. We pray for wisdom, strength and guidance for all our political leaders. We pray for those afficted by climate change throughout the world.

We pray for the sick in our families, among our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We pray for the repose of the souls we have loved and lost. May they rest in the peace of Jesus Christ.

We're proud to share two new exhibitions that opened to the public a few weeks ago:

Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson , "Picturing Justice"

William H. Johnson is Uncle of Deacon Jim Johnson, St. Ann Parish, Florence, SC

This exhibition marks the first national tour of the magnum opus by William Henry Johnson (Florence, South Carolina) entitled Fighters for Freedom. Johnson painted the series in the mid-1940s, creating a pantheon of historic and contemporary leaders who championed justice and equality in the United States & abroad. The exhibition of 25 paintings showcasing Johnson’s later iconographic style is on loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and features works rarely exhibited outside our nation’s capital.

Reflecting Justice

This new exhibition illuminates local civil rights through the art of William H. Johnson. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves inside the mind of William H. Johnson to reflect on what local justice looked like during the mid-20th century and what it might look like today in our community. Visitors are encouraged to submit written examples of present-day figures who are inspiring the fight for freedom and to consider how they can aid their local community in attaining justice and equality for all.

This is the first time the Fighters for Freedom series has ever been on display in Johnson's hometown. We ask that you bring someone with you who has never had the opportunity to experience William Johnson's artwork with you to the opening reception. Let's give Johnson the hometown reception he deserves.

It's Time For Our Annual Garden Road Trip!

Members of the St. Ann Ladies Guild will meet & carpool from the parking lot on the parish campus of St. Ann Church on Thursday, March 6th, leaving at 10:15 AM to travel to view the Pearl Fryar Topiary Gardens in Bishopville, SC.

" Garden History

Pearl Fryar cleared a cornfield on his home property in Bishopville, SC in the early 1980's.

Without any horticultural experience, he created a three-acre topiary garden that is stunningly beautiful, whimsical, educational, and deeply inspiring. Many of the plants in the garden were rescued from nursery compost piles. Pearl transformed discarded trees and shrubs into an arresting landscape of living plant sculptures.

We Need Your Help Mondays through Wednesdays Each Week

We stock shelves on Mondays and set up tables for distribution.

Volunteers begin about 8:30 AM and we are finished about 11:00 AM.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week, volunteers are needed to pack grocery bags for our clients & assist with carrying their groceries to their cars.

In support of St. Martin dePorres, our local food pantry, an outreach program supported by St. Ann Catholic Church, our CCD students will collect your donations of canned & perishable food items and monetary donations in support of their favorite teams--Carolina and Clemson.

What's the goal team? Be the table with the most donations & food collected! Drop off your donations before or after each Mass this weekend, November 16th & 17th, and support your favorite team pick! Which team will score the most donations?

The Columbus HOPE “Helping Other People Everyday” Foundation Inc. is dedicated to bettering the environment for, and increasing the self-reliance and dignity of people with Intellectual Disabilities and special needs. We believe these individuals should have the community support, tools and resources necessary to lead independent productive lives. Through our support of non-profit service organizations that share this philosophy, we are making the world easier to navigate for thousands of people every day.

The Columbus HOPE Foundation accomplishes our mission by developing supplemental sources of funding to augment the available state and federal money for our Intellectual Disabled and Special Needs citizens. These resources are limited, and often do not meet all the needs of the individuals. Immediate, critical and supplemental needs of individuals and families that cannot be met through other funding sources may be funded from the Columbus HOPE Foundation resources.

The Columbus HOPE Foundation Inc. is a South Carolina based non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation operated by the South Carolina Knights of Columbus. Proceeds from our fundraising activities are focused on helping our South Carolina Intellectually Disabled and Special Needs citizens. We work in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, the county Disability Boards and other non-profit service providers to identify the needs, the gaps and the priorities for allocation of collected funds.

Simply put:

-We Raise Funds

-We advocate for our Intellectually Disabled and Special Needs citizens

-We serve our Intellectually Disabled and Special Needs citizens, the homes and the communities that support them through our partnership with the Knights of Columbus, state and local service organizations.

Since its inception in 1977 the Columbus HOPE Foundation has raised more than "$10 Million” to assist South Carolina citizens with Intellectual Disabilities and Special Needs.

Last year the Foundation raised $270,523 state-wide.

The Columbus HOPE Foundation campaign has been very successful since its inception over forty years ago. The South Carolina State Council has established that the Columbus HOPE Foundation as a year around fundraising operation project with the our traditional Tootsie Roll donation fundraising segment being held between Labor Day and Columbus Day if at all possible. To meet the growing needs of our communities, additional fundraising activities are defined, planned and executed by the Foundation through the Sixty-Three (63) South Carolina Knights of Columbus councils.

Our volunteer staff and work force minimizes the overhead costs so that we can maximize the proceeds available to accomplish our mission. The success of these events are credited largely to the individual donors, fundraising activities participants and especially to our corporate sponsors, who lend their names, provide financial support and participate in the event.

We Invite You to Learn More About the Legion of Mary

Join Us As We Pray the Holy Rosary in Florence Area Cemeteries

We Commemorate the Faithful Departed Throughout November

The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, active in almost every country in the world including 29 Legion of Mary organizations in parishes in South Carolina. To be apostolic means to walk in the ways and teaching of Jesus. In other words, to be apostolic is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God by becoming instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. Examples of works include parishioner visitation, hospital and home visitation to the sick or aged, rides to Mass or for personal needs, religious education, attending and praying the Rosary at wake/funeral services, and meeting the other spiritual needs of the parish community through planning / leading novenas and other prayer services.

Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and discussion in a family setting. Then, Legion of Mary members do two hours of definite work each week.

Our meeting times are every Tuesday at 1:00-2:30 PM in the St. Ann Library/Classroom in the St. Ann Parish Life Center. We invite you to come and to pray with us.

During the month of November, the St. Ann Legion of Mary will be praying the Most Holy Rosary at local cemeteries on Tuesday, at 10:00 AM throughout Florence, SC. We invite you to pray the Most Holy Rosary with us every week at these local cemeteries:

"The Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation on family the “Amoris Laetitia” deals elaborately with marriage and family. Relevant passages from the exhortation that deals with the liturgical theme of today are presented here.

The Pope writes, “It is important that marriage be seen as a matter of love, that only those who freely choose and love one another may marry. When love is merely physical attraction or a vague affection spouses become particularly vulnerable once this affection wanes or physical attraction diminishes. Given this frequency with which this happens, it is all the more essential that couples be helped during the first years of their married life to enrich and deepen their conscious and free decision to have, hold and love one another for life.”

“Another great challenge of marriage preparation is to help couples realize that marriage is not something that happens once for all. Their union is real and irrevocable, confirmed and consecrated by the sacrament of matrimony. Yet in joining their lives, the spouses assume an active and creative role in a lifelong project. Their gaze now has to be directed to the future that, with the help of God’s grace, they are daily called to build. For this very reason, neither spouse can expect the other be perfect. Each must set aside all illusions and accept the other as he or she actually is: an unfinished product, need to grow, a work in progress. A persistently critical attitude towards one’s partner is sign that marriage was not entered into as a project to be worked on together, with patience, understanding, tolerance and generosity.

Slowly but surely, love will then give way to constant questioning and criticism, dwelling on each other’s good and bad points, issuing ultimatums and engaging in competition and self-justification. The couple then proves incapable of helping one another to build a mature union. This fact needs to be realistically presented to newly married couples from the outset, so that they can grasp that the wedding is just the beginning.”

“That still water becomes stagnant and good for nothing is an old saying. If, in the first years of marriage, a couple’s experience of love grows stagnant, it loses the very excitement that should be its propelling force. Young love needs to keep dancing towards the future with immense hope.”

“Among the causes of broken marriages are unduly high expectations about conjugal life. Once it becomes apparent that the reality is more limited and challenging than one imagined, the solution is not to think quickly and irresponsibly about separation, but to come to the sober realization that married life is a process of growth, in which each spouse is God’s means of helping the other to mature. Change, improvement, the flowering of the good qualities present in each person—all these are possible. Each marriage is a kind of “salvation history”, which from fragile beginnings grows over time into something precious and enduring. When we read in the Bible about the creation of man and woman, we see God first forming Adam; he realizes that something essential is lacking and so he forms Eve and then hears the man exclaim in amazement, “Yes, this one is just right for me!” We can almost hear the amazing dialogue that must have taken place when the man and the woman first encountered one another. In the life of married couples, even at difficult moments, one person can always surprise the other, and new doors can open for their relationship, as if they were meeting for the first time.”

St. Ann Parish Healing Mass - Friday, October 11th, 6:00 PM, St. Ann Parish

Led by the St. Ann Legion of Mary

St. Ann's will celebrate the annual Healing Mass on Friday, October 11th, at 6:00 PM. Fr. Sylvère Baloza-Baloza will invoke the Holy Spirit and pray over us for physical, mental and spiritual healing and offer anointing.

Through the Apostle, James, (James 5:13-15), he has commanded us:

"Is anyone among your suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praise. Is anyone among your sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the LORD, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the LORD will raise him up. If he committed any sins, he will be forgiven."

We begin a new year filled with activities, places to visit, ideas to share and opportunities for meeting new friends! You're invited as we begin our new year at St. Ann Parish. "Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods represent authentic family planning. They can be used to both achieve and to postpone a pregnancy.

NFP makes use of periodic abstinence from sexual intercourse based upon the observation of the woman’s natural signs of fertility, in order to space births or to limit the number of children when there is a serious reason to do so… this practice fosters in couples an attitude of respect and wonder in the face of human life, which is sacred. It also fosters profound respect for one’s spouse, which is necessary for… authentic intimacy." This fall, we will celebrate the 83rd Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Ann Catholic Church in Florence, SC.

This Friday, July 26th, we will celebrate the Feast of Saints Anne and Joachim with Masses at 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM; we invite you to join us in prayer and thanksgiving.

Fr. JohnBosco will concelebrate the 6:00 PM Mass with our two visiting priests. The Legion of Mary will pray the Most Holy Rosary 30 minutes before each Mass.

The Legion of Mary will host our annual Parish Potluck Supper to follow the 6:00 PM Mass in the St. Ann Parish Life Center. Bring your favorite entree, salad or side to share; beverages provided. You're invited to bring your families, friends and share an evening of good food and friendship with us.

"Dear Parishioners of St. Ann,

Greetings in the Lord! With the encouragement of the Propagation of the Faith office in Charleston, I am reaching out to you with a heartfelt mission appeal for my home parish in India. This appeal aims to support the construction of a Family Center for our parish community, and I will be sharing this message with you during the weekend of July 13/14, 2024.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church: A Beacon of Faith

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, established in 1682 by French Jesuit missionaries as the mission of KORATTAMPATTU, has a rich history. Today, it serves around 200 families and stands as a beacon of Catholicism amidst a predominantly Hindu region. Reflecting on my journey to priesthood, I am reminded of the resilience and faithfulness of our parish community. Despite historical challenges, including a scarcity of local vocations, we have persevered, marking significant milestones such as the ordination of our first native priest in 1984. As the second priest to emerge from our parish, I carry forward this legacy with humility and conviction.

The Urgent Need for a Community Hall

Despite our rich heritage and steadfast devotion, our parish currently faces significant challenges. Neglect from the diocese, compounded by caste politics, has cast a shadow over our community. The absence of essential institutions for spiritual and social growth has left a void. However, inspired by the teachings of the Propagation of Faith, we are called to share our faith stories and nurture bonds between our home parish and the wider Church. Our home parish urgently needs a

community hall—a space of unity, celebration, and spiritual nourishment. The parish survives through the sacrificial support of the people. This project, however, exceeds our current resources.

The construction of a community hall is more than just erecting a physical structure; it symbolizes a renewed commitment to communal solidarity and spiritual enrichment. With your support, we can transform this vision into reality, fostering a sense of belonging and communion among the faithful of our parish. We Prayed in Thanksgiving for Cardinal Archbishop Joseph Coutts' Visit to St. Ann Parish

This past week, Thursday, July 4th, Fr. John Duraisamy and the parishioners of Saints Ann and Anthony Catholic Churches in Florence, SC were honored to welcome Cardinal Archbishop Joseph Coutts from Pakistan, (Archbishop Emeritus of Karachi, Pakistan), who was visiting in our area.

He celebrated the Mass at St. Ann Church at 12 noon. Our church was full as we prayed in thanksgiving for all the successes our country has had and prayed in petition for the future of our country and our democracy.

We thank our St. Ann Ladies Guild for the reception they prepared and served, and for all the friends, family and guests who joined us in prayer on Independence Day as we celebrated Mass and shared fellowship.

St. Martin dePorres Food Pantry, 104 South Kemp Street, Florence, will be closed Monday, May 27th through Monday, June 3rd, 2024 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

We will not have a scheduled appointment for food pick-up on Monday, May 27th, at Harvest Hope, as it is Memorial Day.

We will reopen to our client families the following week, Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Volunteers needed the week of June 3rd-June 7th, every Monday - Wednesday, from about 8:00 AM - 11:30 AM.

Donations are needed of canned goods and shelf stable food products; remember Hunger Knows No Season! Donations may be made to the St. Ann Parish Office, 113 South Kemp Street, Florence, during regularly scheduled office hours, or before any scheduled Mass to the church.

Members of the St. Ann Ladies Guild, and their guests, will carpool from St. Anthony Catholic Church parking lot this morning for their annual spring excursion to a local botannical garden to enjoy a guided tour--this year it's the grounds at Kalmia Gardens of Coker University.

Additional planned shopping excursions to Peace of Heaven Christian Bookstore in Hartsville, S.C. will follow.

Plan to bring your bag lunch or you can order your lunch ahead from a local favorite restaurant-we'll share fellowship and lunch in the meeting room at Peace of Heaven Bookstore.

Eucharistic Miracles Traveling Exhibit

Mar. 18-24 St. Ann Catholic Church, Florence, SC

"We invite you to bring your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to experience this one-of-a-kind exhibit which opened at area Catholic Churches in the Florence area on March 10th.

The Diocese of Charleston is offering a traveling Eucharistic Miracle exhibit--a curated selection from the Eucharistic Miracle exhibit--originally created by Blessed Carlo Acutis.

This exhibit will be available to all parishioners at St. Ann Church, March 18th through March 24th, in the St. Ann Parish Life Center, 113 S. Kemp St., Florence, SC.

Admission is free & open to the public during regular business hours, Monday through Friday and during Mass schedules on the weekends.

The Diocesan Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit consists of 28 bilingual (English/Spanish) bifold panels that recount several Eucharistic miracles documented throughout the history of the Church.

The exhibit is divided into 4 categories, each with an audio-visual guide accessible on mobile devices through the use of a QR code.

Interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Been a Catholic for most of your life and would like to refresh your understanding of your faith traditions? This is the class for you!

Join us every Thursday evening at 6:00 PM in the St. Ann Memorial Library as we explore the history, scripture and traditions of the Catholic Faith.

"BECOMING A CATHOLIC

No one is born Catholic. An unbaptized person may wish to explore becoming a Catholic. Every fall, a group of adults gather to begin that process. They meet regularly with lay leaders and a priest. The group (known as the Catechumenate) moves in stages or steps toward Lent and the Easter Vigil when Baptism is celebrated.

Someone baptized in a Christian church may now wish to be a Catholic. A group similar to the Catechumenate receives instruction, guidance, and support. Reception into the church usually also takes place at the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Catholics frequently discover they have yet to “become Catholic”: some who missed essential religious formation may now be eager to continue the growth that all Catholics should experience. Throughout the year, the parish offers series and sessions for such adults."

"What is RCIA?

The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism."

Easter Baskets for Our Parishioners

It is that time of the year again for collecting items for Easter baskets for our elderly parishioners, shut-ins, and nursing home residents (no candy, please!) We need items for men and women to fill the baskets such as body lotion, socks, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, puzzle books, spiritual books, coloring books, crayons and pencils, etc. We would like the items to fill the Easter baskets to be dropped off to the church by Tuesday, by March 12. Thank you for your continued support of our programs! We will deliver the Easter baskets the week of March 18th....Come be part of our team!

It's Spring! Time For a Garden Adventure!

A guided tour ($8.00 per person) to Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville is scheduled for Friday, March 22nd. We plan to visit Peace of Heaven Book Store in Hartsville & eat our lunch in the public rooms at the bookstore. Bring a sack lunch or we will pre-order our lunch from Sophia's Pizzeria (they have a broad menu) just a short walk from the bookstore; we can pick up and bring back to Peace of Heaven to eat. Open to all women of the parish.

We're Collecting Donations in Support of Infants, Children & Mothers

Donations Collected Through the End of February 2024

"During the month of February, members of St. Ann Ladies Guild, Women of Faith, will be supporting the Chrysalis Center by collecting items for our annual February baby shower event--a service project that supports women, children and their infants during their residence at the Chrysalis Center in Florence, SC.

The Chrysalis Center is an inpatient facility for substance dependent pregnant women and women with children 10 years of age or younger. The program is 3 months
with services delivered to women 365 days per year. Services include individual counseling, groups for trauma, parenting, basic medical, life skills and substance abuse, including an an onsite licensed therapeutic daycare center for infants and
preschool children.

Below, we have attached an alphabetical list of items needed for the mothers and their
children. Your donations may be dropped off to the St. Ann parish office during the week during regular business hours or before any scheduled Mass.

Designed to provide a nurturing therapeutic environment, Chrysalis offers an opportunity for children, up to the age of 10, to continue to live on-site with their mothers for 90-120 days depending on eligibility. This approach offers women the opportunity of seeking help without the fear of losing their children. Children residing at the center receive therapeutic services while their mothers gain a new chance at life … a chance to break the cycle of addiction. The Chrysalis Center accepts Medicaid and other insurance."
